1) After great pain, a formal feeling comes - The nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs - The feet, mechanical, go round - Of Ground, or Air, or Ought - A wooden way Regardless grown, A Quartz contentment, like a stone - This is the Hour of Lead - Remembered, if outlived, As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow- First-Chill-then Stupor-then the letting go- 激しい激痛のあと、形式化した感情が生まれる―― 神経は儀式ばって坐る、墓石のように―― 足が、機械的に、歩きまわる―― 地上の、空中の、それとも何かの―― 木の道を 無関心になって、 石英の満足、石さながらに―― いまは鉛の時間―― もし生きのびたなら、思い起こされるだろう、 凍ってゆく人が、雪を思い出すように―― 最初は――寒け――それから麻痺――そして一切の放棄―― 2) There's a certain Slant of light, Winter Afternoons- When it comes, the Landscape listens- Shadows-hold their breath- When it goes, 'tis like the Distance On the look of Death 斜めに射し込む光があります、 冬の日の午後―― それがやって来る時、風景は耳をそばだてます―― 物影は――息をこらします―― それが去って行く時は、はるかな距離のようです 「死」の表情の上の―― 3) Presentiment-is that long shadow on the Lawn- Indicative that Suns go down- The Notice to the startled Grass That Darkness-is about to pass- 4) The Loneliness One dare not sound- And would as soon surmise As in its Grave plumbing To ascertain the size- The Lonliness whose worst alarm Is lest itself should see And perish from before itself For just a scrutiny- The Horror not to be surveyed- But skirted in the Dark- With Consciousness suspended- And Being under Lock- I fear me this-is Loneliness- The Maker of the soul Its Caverns and its Corridors Illuminate-or seal- 5) I saw no Way-The Heavens were stitched- I felt the Columns close- The Earth reversed her Hemispheres- I touched the Universe- And back it slid-and I alone- A speck upon a Ball- Went out upon Circumference- Beyond the Dip of Bell- 6) There is a pain-so utter- It swallows substance up- Then covers the Abyss with Trance So Memory can step Around-across-upon it- As one within a swoon- Goes safely-where an open eye- Would drop him bone by bone 7) I heard a fly buzz-when I died- The stillness in the Room Was like the stillness in the Air- Between the Heaves of Storm- With Blue-uncertain stumbling Buzz- Between the light-and me- And then the Wilndows failed-and then I could not see to see- 蝿がうなるのが聞こえた――わたしが死ぬ時―― 部屋の中の静けさは 空の静けさのようだった―― 烈しい嵐と嵐の間の―― 憂鬱な――あやふやでにぶい羽音とともに―― 光と――わたしとの間へ――入って来た それから窓がぼやけた――それから 見ようとしても何も見えなくなった―― (日本語訳: 『ディキンソン詩集』亀井俊介編(岩波文庫)より)
